Hill Strategies Research has released its latest report on Arts and Cultural Workers in Canada's Provinces and Territories, based on the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) and historical data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). The report examines the number of artists, selected demographic characteristics of artists, artists' incomes, and trends in the number of artists. The report also provides comparable information for cultural workers and the overall labour force.

In this issue of Hill Strategies' Arts Research Monitor: Summaries of three recent landmark studies related to the benefits of the arts, including Canadian and English summaries of various aspects of the impacts of the arts as well as new estimates of the economic impact of culture in Canada. 

Statistical Insights on the Arts is a quantitative research series, created by Hill Strategies Research, that aims to provide reliable, recent and insightful data on the state of the arts in Canada. The latest edition in the series finds that there are more artists in Canada than auto workers. 

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) has announced the release of the first Culture Satellite Account (CSA) Report, which provides the most precise and reliable data available on the economic impact of culture (inclusive of the arts and heritage) and sport in Canada. 

In the latest issue of Hill Strategies' Arts Research Monitor: Three Canadian studies and one Scottish report related to the social and health benefits of the arts, including a Toronto report on neighbourhood-based community development through the arts, a Vancouver study of the arts and seniors’ well-being, an overview of the potential impacts of documentary films on social change, and a Scottish study of the connection between cultural engagement and health and well-being.

This special issue of the Arts Research Monitor provides a brief summary of some key issues related to arts participation and engagement explored at Measuring Cultural Engagement amid Confounding Variables, a joint research symposium of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Cultural Value Project of the United Kingdom’s Arts & Humanities Research Council. Arts researchers and practitioners from the U.S. and U.K. convened in Washington for the symposium. Kelly Hill was the only Canadian speaker at the June 2014 event.

Hill Strategies Research Inc. has posted its most recent presentation on diversity in BC arts audiences, prepared for the Alliance and the Vancouver Opera. The data was shared in a presentation in Vancouver on June 19.
