Jay Brazeau Suffers Onstage Stroke

During the Thursday, May 12 performance of Hairspray at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, actor Jay Brazeau experienced a minor stroke and the performance was cancelled.

He is expected to fully recover and return to the run at a later date.

The Arts Club Theatre Company is currently rehearsing Jay's understudy and performances will continue tomorrow evening.

The entire arts community and appreciative audiences join in wishing Jay a speedy recovery and look forward to his return.

UBC Museum of Anthropology Receives National Landmark Status

 The University of British Columbia’s iconic Museum of Anthropology, designed by the renowned late architect Arthur Erickson, has received one of Canada’s most prestigious architectural awards.

The museum is one of four buildings to receive the 2011 Prix du XXe Siècle Award for enduring excellence in Canadian architecture from Architecture Canada | RAIC, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Robson Square, whose occupants include UBC, is also one of the honoured buildings.

Simon Johnston To Leave Gateway

Gateway Theatre Artistic & Executive Director Simon Johnston has announced his resignation, effective April 2012. Mr. Johnston has been at the helm of Richmond’s only professional theatre company since January 2000.

Johnston will leave Gateway to pursue other artistic projects.

Advocacy Update

It has been a very busy year so far for our Alliance and in case you’ve missed anything, or want to know what we are up to, you may find this update useful.  We have seen the appointment of a new Premier of our province, a Federal election called, and some changes and a review of gaming funds underway.  We can also look forward to an HST referendum, a Municipal election and possibly a provincial election.  We also have a by-election in which our Premier is running for a seat.

Hear & See Bing Thom's Concert Hall Concept

You are invited to hear noted architect Bing Thom describe and discuss the stunning new proposal for a 1,950 seat underground concert hall, a 450-seat  small theatre and approximately 35,000 sq. ft. of unallocated (possibly exhibition) space for the Vancouver Concert Hall and Theatre Society.

This project , planned for the Vancouver Art Gallery site and dependent on the Gallery relocation, will bring music, dance, dialogue and theatre to the heart of the city.
