JOB DESCRIPTION:
Surrey Schools is hiring Theatre Technicians into an on-call pool. Reporting to the Manager, District Theatre and the Technical Coordinators, the Theatre Technician shall assist in the technical operations of the District Theatre for performances, rehearsals, maintenance periods, and other work as required.
The Theatre Technician will be a working member of the technical crew for client rentals including load in/load out, set up/take down, and typically operating a console or the fly system for the performance or rehearsal. Additionally, the Theatre Technician may be tasked to assist in theatre maintenance activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Take on technical roles in lighting, sound, stage technician, and other duties as required
Set up, take down, hang, focus, circuit, and program all lighting instruments
Program and operate the lighting console
Set up and take down all audio equipment related to the event
Plug in/patch all connecting cabling between audio components
Operate either the Front of House or Monitor audio console for the event
Playback audio as per client’s instruction
Occasionally record audio for distribution to schools
Set up and take down all staging including risers, music equipment, chairs, tables, client scenery, etc.
Operate the counterweight rigging system in a safe and efficient manner
Load and unload items and the corresponding stage bricks on the counterweight rigging system
Facilitate onstage changes to scenery and technical equipment
Perform related duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
Job Requirements – Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Knowledge of technical theatre procedures and practices pertaining to working in a 1,000-seat roadhouse theatre
Knowledge of the technical needs of several typical arts disciplines such as dance, theatre, classical and popular music concerts
Working knowledge of theatrical lighting and audio systems
Working knowledge of a counterweight rigging system
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals from diverse cultures and age groups
Ability to work at heights
Ability to perform under high-pressure situations and within tight time constraints
Ability to proactively identify, anticipate problems, and initiate solutions
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position, including lifting and carrying heavy items, climbing ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, stretching, and working on feet for extended periods of time
Training and Experience
Completion of Grade 12 and one year of industry-specific training or an equivalent of professional experience
A minimum of 1 year experience working in a live performing arts venue in a technical theatre position

REMUNERATION:
This is a unionized position that offers an hourly wage rate of $35.22/hr plus benefits package: Municipal Pension, health, vacation, and sick benefits. Effective date per collective agreement.
