JOB DESCRIPTION:
The primary function of the Costume Technician is to provide technical and instructional support to faculty and students in the Stagecraft and Event Technology Diploma Program. This temporary full-time (35 hours per week) position is available starting August 25, 2025, until December 19, 2025. This position may be extended or concluded early due to operational requirements. Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with shift days and times subject to change depending on departmental needs. Occasional evening and/or weekend work will be required. The position is located at the New Westminster campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide instructional support to the Stagecraft program, including advising students on costume construction and wardrobe crew responsibilities.

  • Supervise and assist students in building, maintaining, and wrapping costume, makeup, and hair elements for productions.

  • Train students in the use of costume shop equipment, basic sewing, costume construction, pattern cutting, alteration, and fitting.

  • Train and supervise student crews in backstage costume changes, preparation of actors and costumes for rehearsals and performances.

  • Demonstrate and oversee proper use of machinery, tools, and computers for assignments.

  • Ensure adequate inventory of supplies for courses and productions.

  • Participate in production meetings and help interpret designer/director requests when needed.

  • Oversee and enforce safety procedures for students in Stagecraft facilities.

  • Supervise students during production runs as needed.

  • Set up and store equipment and materials for labs in consultation with faculty.

  • Construct costumes for college theatre productions, including measuring, making, and fitting.

  • Assist guest costume designers with production.

  • Provide time and cost estimates for costume production.

  • Maintain costume shop tools and equipment, arranging for repairs when needed.

  • Clean, organize, and restock the costume shop.

  • Maintain inventory of theatre costumes, properties, and equipment, including rentals and loans.

  • Communicate with professional companies for exchanges and loans.

  • Record and submit receipts for petty cash purposes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in costume and/or fashion design, or equivalent, with three years’ related work experience in theatre, film, or television (equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered).

  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to prioritize, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, with fluency in English.

  • Proficiency in sewing, pattern drafting, and costume construction techniques.

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Experience with inventory management, expense reports, and sourcing supplies.

  • Teamwork skills and the ability to build and sustain positive working relationships.

  • Experience liaising with multiple departments and coordinating complex collaborative tasks.

  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse stakeholders and support faculty and students.

  • Experience demonstrating safe use of machines and equipment (educational setting experience is an asset).

  • Physical capability for manual labour, including setup, transport, and striking of equipment.

  • Valid B.C. driver’s license.

REMUNERATION:
$29.53 to $32.97 per hour. Salary scale and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
