The Arts Club Theatre Company is Canada’s largest year-round not-for-profit theatre company. The Arts Club offers the best in professional theatre and has staged over 650 productions. JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Second Electrician is a permanent part-time role, part of our fit-up and running crews. This position works under the supervision of the Stanley Theatre Technical Director. Scheduling will depend on the specific demands of each production. This is a unionized position under the Arts Club Theatre Company/I.A.T.S.E. 118 Collective Agreement.

The Second Electrician assists the Head Electricians at various venues and may be asked to lead the crew during hangs, focus sessions, level sessions, and show runs, as well as perform similar duties for the Sound department on smaller shows. They also provide swing relief as a running crew position.

We are seeking a reliable teammate who supports production through technical excellence, excels at troubleshooting, and has broad knowledge of theatrical lighting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Program and operate computer lighting boards (ETC ION) and all lighting system components.

  • Operate sound for pre-recorded sound (QLab).

  • Assist with all aspects of pre-production for electrics, sound, and video.

  • Read, understand, and implement Lighting Designer plots and associated paperwork.

  • Hang, focus, and maintain a wide range of theatrical fixtures.

  • Supervise lighting, sound, and video installations when required.

  • Participate as running crew and assist on theatre rentals when needed.

  • Assist with maintenance, organization, and purchasing of consumables.

  • Support other stage crew during shows (e.g., scene changes).

  • Maintain occupational safety and cleanliness in work areas.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient in programming and operating computer lighting boards (ETC ION) and all lighting components.

  • Able to read and understand Lighting Designer plots and related paperwork.

  • Skilled in networking, troubleshooting, and maintaining IP-based protocols for sound, lights, and video.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to problem-solve and work under tight deadlines.

  • Physically able to lift heavy objects and work at heights.

  • Broad knowledge of theatrical lighting procedures, time management, and theatre products.

  • Experience with counterweighted fly systems, rigging, and striking lighting equipment.

  • Operation and maintenance of motorized stage equipment control systems.

  • Ability to supervise lighting hangs, focus, and strike crews.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience as a stage electrician for a professional theatre company.

  • Experience working in a Fly House and at heights.

  • LPEC certificate.

  • Ability to lift, push, or maneuver heavy loads safely.

  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Assets:

  • IATSE Local 118 membership.

  • Experience in programming and running sound control for live mix and pre-recorded sound, as well as projection (Q-Lab).

  • Limited or Full Entertainment certificate.

  • Fall Arrest Certification.

  • OFA Level 1 certificate.

  • Pyrotechnic and/or Firearms certificate.

  • More than three years’ experience as a Head Electrician.

  • Experience with both Windows and Apple OS and computer networking.

REMUNERATION:
$31.95/hr until Sept. 1, 2025, then $33.55/hr. Hourly rate is set by the IATSE Collective Agreement. Includes option for IATSE RRSP Matching Program, comprehensive benefits through IATSE Local 118, vacation, and PTO as defined in the ACTC/IATSE CBA.
