JOB DESCRIPTION:
Surrey Art Gallery is looking for a collaborative and detail-oriented Visual Arts Programmer to join its team to offer a diverse range of visual arts programs. This is an excellent opportunity to engage Surrey communities, use and expand your experience with multiple mediums, and collaborate with a team of artist-educators.

Internationally recognized for its award-winning programs, Surrey Art Gallery exhibits contemporary art by local, national, and international artists, including digital and sound art. Gallery programs include registered courses, school programs, family workshops, artist talks, tours, and artmaking and learning opportunities with artists, educators, and other specialists.

The Visual Arts Programmer is an RPT posting. Hours are typically Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, 28 hours per week, including some evening and weekend hours. The starting hourly rate for this position is $32.04. This is a Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE Local 402) position, Community Services Assistant 5 classification.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and administer community-focused registered programming

Registered Courses, Camps, and Workshops

  • Develop quarterly course, camp, and workshop schedules

  • Data entry into the City of Surrey course registration system

  • Ability to occasionally instruct lessons in a variety of mediums

  • Administer program registration

  • Maintain art materials supply room and studio spaces

Artist-Educators

  • Hire, train, supervise, and assess performance

  • Manage communications, including scheduling

  • Support the first day of each course session (some evenings and weekends)

Communications

  • Collaborate with the Gallery Communications Coordinator to write social media posts, e-newsletters, and related content

  • Ensure accuracy of course registration content in publications

  • Coordinate photography and documentation of programs

Reporting and Writing

  • Contribute to grant applications, annual reports, and strategic plans

  • Track and analyze statistics and budgets

Supervised by the Curator of Visual Arts and Resources, the position works directly with the Volunteer Programmer, School and Family Programmer, artist-educators, volunteers, and Gallery, Arts Centre, and City staff, as well as contract artist-educators.

The Gallery is seeking a creative educator who enjoys collaboration, thrives in a dynamic environment, and is comfortable meeting deadlines and adapting to change.

Required skills include extremely strong attention to detail and organizational skills; ability to prioritize; broad functional knowledge of a variety of art mediums; excellent oral and written communication skills (including grant and report writing); effective administrative, interpersonal, and supervisory skills; strong problem-solving abilities; and the capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University or college degree or diploma in a related discipline such as museum education, art education, fine arts, or general education with an art specialty (additional teaching certification is an asset)

  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in developing, administering, and presenting initiatives in this area of specialty, including supervision, or an equivalent acceptable combination of training and experience

  • Emergency First Aid with CPR certification

  • Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
