For over fifty years, The Capilano Review (TCR) has supported and been sustained by a vibrant community of readers, writers, and artists interested in experimentation in writing and art. Our publication offers a welcoming and thoughtful space for the work of established and emerging writers and artists from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. In addition to publishing two print and digital issues of the magazine each year, TCR hosts an annual Writer-in-Residence, thematic writing contests, and numerous workshops, readings, and other events. We also offer paid editorial internships. We acknowledge that we carry out our work on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

Volunteer Opportunity Description:

The Board of The Capilano Review Arts Society, publisher of The Capilano Review, is seeking a new Board Treasurer to support in the governance and oversight of a Vancouver-based not-for-profit society with strong community impacts. This opportunity offers candidates with strong leadership experience and development expertise to give back to the arts and writing community in direct and engaged ways. A successful candidate will have experience in managing finances, as well as a clear articulation of goals and strategies of financial responsibility, growth, and sustainability in the arts and not-for-profit sectors.

Responsibilities:

– to oversee general operations of the Capilano Review Contemporary Arts Society, including vision, policy and opportunities for growth.
– to oversee the charity’s activities and budget;
– to offer support to staff; and oversee the hiring and annual review of continuing staff;
– to monitor financial resources and provide financial oversight;
– to ensure legal and ethical integrity;
– to plan and engage in fundraising;
– to share ideas for new opportunities for the society and the magazine ;
– to promote Indigenous editorial content, relationship building, and inquiry;

The Board of Directors are expected to attend quarterly Board Meetings, meet with staff,
partners, and supporters as needed, and attend Annual General Meetings. Meetings will be held in person or by zoom and will include presentations by staff members as needed.

The Board Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the organization's finances, including:

– to oversee quarterly financial reviews and budget projections;
– to advise the staff and Board on financial matters, e.g., on expected surplus or deficits;
– to consult with staff on broader financial matters should they arise;
– to advise where necessary on financial strategies such as long-term investments,
streamlining of financial systems, etc.;
– to ensure the review engagement required by the Canada Council and other funders;
– to present the completed fiscal year statements at the AGM.

Qualifications:

– Familiarity with The Capilano Review;
– Experience in managing finances for non-profit and charitable organizations;
– Education or equivalent experience in accounting or finances;
– Ability to work collaboratively with a team;
– A shared commitment to The Capilano Review's values and commitments, including a
willingness to support the organization in the realization of its vision and Editorial
Policy, found on our website.
