Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre Expansion – Plaza Artwork
/ORGANIZATION: City of Surrey
DEADLINE: October 20, 2025

CALL FOR ARTISTS:
The City of Surrey invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from professional artists or artist teams to create a free-standing artwork for the entry plaza of the future Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre Expansion.
The Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre is in Surrey City Centre, just a short walk from the Gateway SkyTrain station. Surrey City Centre is transforming into a walkable, transit-oriented downtown core for business, culture, and entertainment, while also emerging as the region’s second downtown. The City of Surrey is planning a new expansion to the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre to meet the growing needs of the neighbourhood. The state-of-the-art expansion will offer residents enhanced arts, culture, recreation, and social opportunities—a place where the community can come together to play, exercise, and connect.
A key theme that emerged during community engagement was the need for free and open social spaces. In response, a generous entry plaza has been designed for planned events but also creates opportunity for informal gatherings.
An iconic artwork is envisioned for the plaza that welcomes residents to the facility and marks the plaza as a communal gathering place. As the neighbourhood densifies, free and open public space will grow in importance for residents. Surrey City Centre is already one of the most diverse areas of the Lower Mainland, and that diversity will increase as people move to Surrey from across the province, the country, and the world. It is important that all residents, new and old, feel welcome at the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre.
