The Campbell River Art Gallery is a space for thinking and producing knowledge about contemporary visual art. We exhibit the work of professional artists from across Canada in our main gallery and satellite cases, with a specific focus on presenting artistic projects from under-represented positions within contemporary art practice.

The Gallery’s commitment to critical is enacted through our public programming and outreach activities: workshops for adults and youth, school and community gallery tours (followed by an art activity), artist-in-the-school programs, and other special events.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Campbell River Art Gallery is currently seeking applications from highly motivated and creative individuals for the position of Curator of Contemporary Art. The successful candidate will be a dedicated individual with the skill and energy required to steward the curatorial program of the Gallery.

JOB SUMMARY
The Curator of Contemporary Art is responsible for key aspects of the Gallery’s contemporary art exhibition program. This includes researching and delivering exhibitions and related public events within a coherent artistic vision established by the Executive Director. The Curator of Contemporary Art oversees exhibition installation and event programming, while also being responsible for the Gallery’s small collection of contemporary art.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Researches, develops, proposes, and implements the contemporary art program (exhibitions, lectures, interpretive events)

  • Determines and oversees the installation of art exhibitions

  • Manages the care of the Gallery’s permanent collection by exercising best practices, while working with the Museum where the collection is stored

  • Identifies, researches, and recommends potential funding sources to the Executive Director

  • Prepares and tracks the exhibition budget

  • Promotes the profile of the Gallery by nurturing relationships with artists, the regional arts community, relevant government agencies, and peer institutions

  • Works collaboratively and responsively as part of the Gallery staff in a team environment

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in Art History or Curatorial Studies, and 1–3 years of relevant curatorial experience

  • Broad knowledge of contemporary art and artists in British Columbia, across Canada, and beyond

  • Demonstrated record of exhibition development and experience with program development

  • Working knowledge of the installation process for contemporary art

  • Strong planning and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize projects

  • Well-developed research, organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively and a commitment to meeting deadlines

  • Grant-writing and fundraising abilities

  • Experience preparing and working within fixed budgets

SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Proven project-management skills, including budget creation and monitoring

  • Excellent visual acuity and aesthetic judgment

  • Strong ability to inspire others, support teamwork, and build relationships

  • Excellent time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks

REMUNERATION:
Starting salary of $31.00 per hour, 35 hours per week, 4 weeks paid vacation, stipend toward BC Healthcare. This is a permanent position and includes a six-month probationary period.
