Job Description:
Kingsgate Chorus is looking for a director to lead us in our 2025–26 season. We have two seasons per year: fall (September–December) and spring (January–May). We are looking for a creative, collaborative, joyful person to lead our amateur group of singers.
Time commitment:
Weekly rehearsals: Mondays, 7–9 PM (Sept–Dec 2025 & Jan–May 2026)
Prep time: 20 hours pre-season, approx. 6–8 hours per week (arranging, practice track creation, planning)
Seasonal performance: End-of-term concerts
Option for 1–2 additional community gigs per term (compensated separately)
We are open to alternate models including job sharing and would be happy to discuss this in an interview
Responsibilities:
The Choir Director is responsible for:
Planning weekly choir rehearsals
Leading vocal warm-ups
Arranging songs
Teaching songs to the choir
Working toward a show at the end of each term
Rehearsals are led by ear (not using sheet music), with lyric sheets and practice tracks. Ability to accompany the choir is a bonus. The Choir Director is supported by member-led committees who run many of the administrative and logistical/planning aspects of the choir.
Qualifications:
A skilled arranger who can create dynamic five-part harmonies
Comfortable playing an instrument to support rehearsals, or able to work with an accompanist
Able to teach arrangements by ear
Experienced in vocal coaching, guiding phrasing, timing, and expressive technique
A collaborative communicator and leader who respects our grassroots, community-led structure — someone who welcomes input and fosters a shared sense of ownership, while also bringing their own clear musical vision and decisiveness when needed
