The ACT Arts Centre (The ACT), centered in the heart of the scenic, growing community of Maple Ridge, is the leading provider of engaging, vibrant, and excellent Arts Learning Programs, Gallery Exhibitions, and Performing Arts Presentations for the growing communities of the region. Opened in 2003, the 486-seat theatre, studios, classrooms, and Art Gallery are home to many cultural and community events, delivering an impressive array of diverse arts and cultural programming and activities to over 80,000 patrons annually.
The Arts Learning Programs include instruction and learning activities in the visual arts—painting, drawing, textile and fiber arts, ceramics, and digital media, among others—and in the performing arts of theatre, dance, and music. Learning programs are offered for a wide range of ages, from infants to seniors.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The ACT Arts Centre is currently seeking an enthusiastic contract instructor, passionate about ceramics and teaching, to design and deliver programming onsite at The ACT. The instructor will design and lead adult and children’s workshops, classes, and camps, teaching fundamental skills in hand-building, wheel-throwing, surface decoration, and glazing. There may also be opportunities to lead activities at community events.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Developing and delivering high-quality ceramics programming for adults and children, instructing a variety of ceramics techniques
Actively monitoring student progress, and providing constructive feedback and encouragement to support students’ artistic and skill development through clear, positive communication
Preparing the studio space with necessary tools, clay, and materials before each session and ensuring thorough cleanup afterward
Maintaining safe and appropriate use of studio equipment, including kilns, tools, and glazes, contributing to the proper functioning of the studio
Following established procedures to ensure student work is dried, glazed, and fired correctly and on schedule
Maintaining clear and responsive communication with The ACT’s staff and studio technicians
Demonstrating professionalism, punctuality, and a strong commitment to student success and program excellence
QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of a BFA in Ceramics or equivalent training and experience
Minimum two years’ experience and proven track record as a ceramics instructor, working with students of various ages and abilities
Active ceramic arts practice
Knowledgeable of safety considerations around ceramic studio equipment and materials
Availability to work a varied schedule including weekdays, evenings, and weekends, and available for week-long camps during school holidays (half/full days)
Interest in and enthusiasm for the wide range of The ACT Arts Centre’s learning programs
Must submit to a Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check
