Job Description:
Coastal Sound Music is hiring a conductor for our Kids Choir! This group is made up of singers from grades 1 through 3, and is non-auditioned. The group rehearses once a week for 1.5 hours, plus 30 minutes of theory, and performs on shows alongside the rest of Coastal Sound Music’s choirs 3 times a year. The conductor of the Kids Choir will work collaboratively with the rest of the artistic team, most often with the conductors of Sources and Junior Choir. The conductor will be assisted by one of our Junior Accompanists. The main role of this position is to instill a love of singing in the kids you work with!
Regular rehearsals - Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:30 PM from September to June, with breaks in December and March (2-3 weeks)
Theory sessions - Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:00 PM from October to June.
Concerts - December 6, March TBD (likely March 6), June 6
Venues - Rehearsals and theory are held at Blakeburn Elementary in Port Coquitlam, Concerts in December and June are held at Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam. March concert TBD.
Responsibilities:
● Plan and lead weekly rehearsals where the conductor will develop the singers’ technique and reading skills, build community, and prepare the ensemble for performances
● Select appropriate repertoire for the level of the ensemble to best develop the singers as choral musicians
● Perform in concerts alongside the rest of the organization, assisting in the success of the plans for these events
● Email the ensemble weekly bulletins to keep their families up to date on relevant information and their progress
● Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Operations Manager on the success of this ensemble
● Contribute to recruiting singers to the ensemble, and the wider organization
● Represent Coastal Sound at public performances
● Possible additional community performances
Qualifications:
● A Bachelor’s of Music degree or higher
● Experience educating singers
● Experience working with the age group (primary grades)
● Strong knowledge of age relevant vocal technique and pedagogy
● Strong knowledge of age relevant choral repertoire
● Background in Kodály, Orff, or SongWorks a strong asset
● Clear conducting skills
● Strong communication skills
● Criminal background check

Remuneration:
$87 per hour - 1.5 hours for regular weekly rehearsals (September to June), and 30 minutes for weekly theory sessions (October to June) $80 per month (September to June) - for administration and communication with the choir Additional hours for concerts 3 times a year, potential for other events/opportunities upon approval, charged at the $87 per hour rate, to a maximum of $450 for a daily rate.
