VEMS is a BC nonprofit Society and registered charity. Our goal is to bring as much music as possible to kids in Vancouver schools. We offer choir, band, guitar and other programs after school.

Job Description:
VEMS is seeking Guitar Instructors for the 2026-2027 school year. The groups have one rehearsal per week immediately after school 3pm-4pm. There are two schools running the program. One is east (Knight and East 20th) and the other is west (Oak and West 12th) A concert or showcase per term will also be required.
The children taking this program have no previous musical experience. The goal for the instructor is to create an emotionally and physically safe and fun environment in which the kids' skills can start, grow and enrich their live with music.
Responsibilities:
• Punctual
• Run weekly rehearsals.
• Take attendance and follow up about multiple absences
• Plan and program concerts/demonstrations for parents
• Liaise with the Parent Band (PAC) coordinator and Principal
• Communicate via e-mail to parents regarding performances
• Follow all public health and safety guidelines
• Ensure children are safe, particularly at the end of rehearsal
• Coordinate with afterschool care as needed, depending on the school. This will apply only to afterschool programming, and each school may have different requirements.
• Attend VEMS annual training.
Qualifications:
• A bachelor’s degree in music or in the process of acquiring said degree
• Must be able to read music
• Previous experience teaching young people
• Must be able to demonstrate and play the guitar
• Must be comfortable singing and teaching basic singing so that children can sing along with the guitar
• Criminal background check (VEMS staff will provide information on how to obtain)
• Enjoy working with Elementary aged children.
• Proficiency with the guitar
• Comfortable singing in the soprano range (falsetto is OK)
• Confidence working with absolute beginners
• Organized
• Patient
• Communication skills
• Flexible with children’s needs
• Ability to make the work of learning an instrument fun
