CALL FOR ARTISTS:
Start with Art is a special annual exhibition at Seymour Art Gallery, created to encourage young people to appreciate, collect, and curate their own art collections.
We are seeking artwork by adult artists that appeals to people aged 16 and under. We have found that young audiences often connect with narrative artwork and work with a sense of humour.
In this unique exhibition, we offer a special price list exclusively for young people. Adults may also purchase artwork, but at the regular listed price. Artwork is displayed at “kids’ eye-view,” and engaging programming for young people takes place throughout the exhibition.
Criteria: Only original works created since January 2023 are eligible. All pieces must be one-of-a-kind. If submitting prints (such as screen prints, risographs, or lino prints), they must be signed, editioned, and part of an edition no larger than 100.
Work must be for sale. There are no size restrictions; however, as this is a group exhibition, space is limited. Artists are encouraged to submit at least five pieces. Submitted works should be from a single series or body of work, as selected pieces will be displayed together.
Availability: The call is open to artists in British Columbia; local drop-off and pick-up are required. Selected work must be suitably prepared for exhibition and available for drop-off on Sunday, March 15, 2026. The exhibition runs March 24 – May 2, 2026. Artists must collect their work between May 7–10, 2026.
Restrictions: With the exception of ART PARTY and Winter Gift Gallery, artists may not appear in exhibitions more frequently than once every three years. If you have exhibited in a solo or group exhibition at Seymour Art Gallery within the past three years, you are not eligible to apply.
Please Note: If your work is selected and you participate in Start with Art, you will not be eligible to apply for a solo or group exhibition (with the exception of ART PARTY and Winter Gift Gallery) for three years.
Sales: Work must be for sale. Each piece must have one regular selling price (for adults) and one lower price (for young people aged 16 and under). The gallery requests a maximum price of $150 for youth pricing; lower-priced works are encouraged. Smaller artworks are recommended. Seymour Art Gallery retains a 25% commission on all works sold.
Membership: Artists do not need to be members of Seymour Art Gallery to apply. Selected artists must become members ($25 annual membership).
