JOB DESCRIPTION:
Temporary Leave Replacement Position (ASAP until further notice)
Hours to be determined (position primarily on-campus with the possibility of some remote work)

The Instructional Designer, Online + Hybrid Learning supports instructors in the planning, development, design, and activation of courses through the University’s Learning Management System (LMS). The Instructional Designer also designs and delivers professional development curriculum and resources to prepare instructors to teach online or in hybrid formats. Using expertise in online and hybrid pedagogy, along with strong listening, interpersonal, and community-building skills, the Instructional Designer helps instructors develop accessible and engaging learner-centered courses and programs for students.

This position works collaboratively and consultatively with instructors, students, departments, and offices across campus as part of a small team within the Teaching and Learning Centre.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support instructors in developing and designing Moodle course sites for online and hybrid courses across undergraduate, graduate, and non-credit programs.

  • Develop and deliver professional development curriculum, workshops, resources, and one-on-one instruction for instructors and staff new to Moodle or teaching online.

  • Collaborate with instructors and technicians to create accessible online and hybrid classes.

  • Work with the Teaching and Learning Centre and other departments to organize and deliver professional learning opportunities.

  • Provide individual or group training and resources in accessible formats to instructors and staff on new learning technologies.

  • Consult with departments on best practices for using Moodle to deliver training resources.

  • Collaborate with the Instructional Technologies Specialist and ITS to research and customize updates to learning technology infrastructure.

  • Guide instructors in effectively using interactive and multimodal online resources to improve learning and engagement.

  • Create instructional materials for staff, instructors, and students in a range of formats, including text, audio, and video.

  • Ensure instructors and technicians comply with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act when using learning tools.

  • Provide emergency technical support to instructors via phone, Zoom, or email.

  • Stay current on advancements and trends in post-secondary education, online learning, inclusive teaching, and studio-based education.

  • Mentor and supervise student research and teaching assistants working on teaching and learning projects.

  • Contribute to planning and strategy development related to online, hybrid, and general pedagogical practices.

  • Create and maintain content for TLC communications, including the website and bi-weekly faculty newsletter.

  • Meet with vendors and communicate product needs to ITS.

  • Participate in the Learning Technologies Advisory Group and other committees as appropriate.

  • Provide support for Faculty Teaching Associates as required.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a relevant art, media, or design discipline.

  • Supplementary education or certification in online pedagogy and instruction (preferred).

  • Familiarity with the Instructional Skills Workshop model; facilitator certification is an asset.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience supporting instructors in designing and troubleshooting online/hybrid courses at the post-secondary level.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current educational research and best practices in online pedagogy, including active learning, student engagement, and assessment models.

  • Experience with common learning technologies, including Moodle (preferred), Zoom, Kaltura, Camtasia, H5P, and collaboration tools such as Miro, Mural, and Padlet.

  • Proven experience developing and delivering workshops and training resources for instructors and students.

  • Experience supervising research or teaching assistants.

  • Familiarity with art and design education or a creative practice is an asset.

  • Knowledge of inclusive teaching principles and equity frameworks is an asset.

  • Strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a small team.

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills, with a tactful and professional approach.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to anticipate needs and develop responsive programs.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, Google Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, and learning technologies such as Moodle, Zoom, and Camtasia.

  • Familiarity with HTML, web hosting platforms, and Mailchimp is an asset.

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
