JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory (AHVA) at the University of British Columbia invites applications for the role of Digital Media Technician (CUPE 116), with an anticipated start date in November 2025. This full-time position offers a monthly salary of $5,439.00–$5,910.00 plus benefits.
The Digital Media Technician supports instruction and practice in digital media within AHVA. Key responsibilities include maintaining and supervising digital media equipment, ensuring safe use of facilities, conducting demonstrations, assisting students and faculty, and managing digital lab operations across multiple AHVA buildings. The role also involves supervising student assistants, providing safety training, advising on digital media practices, and supporting installation of digital works for exhibitions.
The position is based primarily at the Audain Art Centre on the UBC Point Grey campus and reports to the Administrator and the Studios, Exhibitions, and Facilities Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee daily operations of digital instruction and practice spaces across AHVA facilities.
Establish office hours and develop resources to support students and faculty in digital media.
Order supplies and monitor inventory for digital labs.
Ensure adherence to safety protocols and maintain clean, functional facilities.
Supervise, maintain, and propose upgrades for digital labs and related equipment.
Research and advise on emerging digital media tools, products, and techniques.
Maintain and repair digital media equipment or coordinate external repairs when necessary.
Support digital components of exhibitions at the AHVA Gallery.
Contribute to long-term planning for digital media instructional needs.
Prepare and manage budgets for digital media facilities.
Hire, train, and supervise Work Learn student assistants.
Troubleshoot digital labs and ensure smooth daily operations.
Stay current with developments in digital media relevant to art education.
Develop and enforce safety standards and training for digital media use.
Provide technical demonstrations and assistance in digital media courses.
Support instructors in developing and teaching digital media–based courses.
Provide guidance on effective use of digital and multimedia tools in art education.
Prepare materials and equipment for classroom and studio use.
Perform related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
University degree in a relevant field or technical program and at least four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives and demonstrate commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education and experience in both technical and creative aspects of digital media.
Proficiency with digital media software such as Adobe Creative Suite.
Familiarity with coding languages and programs such as TouchDesigner, Blender, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi.
Experience working in a digital lab environment and with digital imaging and printing tools.
Working knowledge of 3D printers, scanners, cameras, projectors, microcontrollers, and related equipment.
Experience installing digital artworks for exhibitions.
Knowledge of studio art theory, practice, and art history.
Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to instruct others.
Ability to use basic productivity software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team.
Demonstrated tact, discretion, and sound judgment.
