Semiahmoo Arts Society (SAS) is a community organization and registered charity that provides opportunities for “arts for everyone” in the South Surrey White Rock area. We believe that art and its creation is foundational to a healthy community, and that everyone should have access to the many health and social benefits of participating in art making.

SAS services include visual art, pottery, and performing arts classes taught by artists and art educators, as well exhibitions and support for practicing artists, and accessible community programs for seniors, families, children, and adults living with developmental disabilities.

Established in 1974, Semiahmoo Arts Society is located in the South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre where we operate the arts space, including the Turnbull Gallery, the Funke Arts Studio, a 14-wheel pottery studio, and The Art Shop at SAS featuring work from member artists.

Job Description:

The Program Coordinator reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for programming the arts spaces at South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre which include the Turnbull Gallery, the Funke Arts Studio, and the 14-wheel pottery studio. This role develops, coordinates, implements, oversees, and evaluates all SAS’ classes and workshops.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops class and workshop content in consultation with arts educators (instructors)

  • Schedules and coordinates classes and workshops

  • Recruits, hires, trains and coordinates class and workshop instructors and volunteers

  • Liaises with City of Surrey Community Arts staff to meet City programming deadlines and coordinate City/SAS policies and procedures

  • Sets fees for classes and workshops

  • Plans and coordinates birthday parties, private and corporate workshop programs

  • Develops policies and guidelines for art space use and instructors and participants

  • Liaises with marketing to promote classes, workshops, parties, private and corporate events

  • Monitors and evaluates patron feedback and makes improvements accordingly

Qualifications:

  • University graduation in Fine Arts, leisure management or a related discipline

  • 1-2 years related experience in arts programming or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience

  • Demonstrated interest and passion for the arts and arts education

  • Valid Standard First Aid certification

  • Considerable knowledge of the South Surrey White Rock community an asset

  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in community arts education

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to effectively guide and support instructors and volunteers

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

  • Able to interact tactfully with the public in a diverse community

  • Strong computer skills with ability to learn and adapt to current and new computer software applications
