JOB DESCRIPTION:
The City of Surrey is seeking a qualified Theatre Technician for the Surrey Civic Theatres (SCT). This is a technical position that provides expertise and oversight to ensure safe and efficient operation of technical systems within theatre and festival environments. The Theatre Technician is responsible for implementing all necessary details to ensure the various production elements related to performances and activities in the Surrey Civic Theatres venues and City of Surrey festivals are executed safely and professionally.

Civic Theatres include the following performance spaces:
• The Surrey Arts Centre’s 405-seat Main Stage (traditional proscenium stage and fly gallery)
• The 129-seat Studio Theatre (black box theatre at Surrey Arts Centre)
• Centre Stage in the Council Chambers at Surrey’s City Hall (200-seat performance venue)
• Other Civic venues such as Clayton Community Centre, and outdoor events in Surrey Parks

This role offers the opportunity to join a friendly and supportive technical theatre team passionate about live events and performing arts. The position offers the opportunity to have a voice in technical operations at SCT and to explore and expand related areas of interest.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Act as a technical crew leader and operate technical elements for advanced events
• Have working knowledge of theatrical lighting, live event audio systems, counterweight fly systems, projection/video systems, equipment maintenance, and basic set construction, and be a specialist in either theatrical lighting or theatrical sound
• Oversee and support production staff, rental clients, contractors, and others using technical systems
• Ensure maintenance, cleaning, and inspections are completed under direction of the Technical Director
• Work with artists and technical staff to facilitate technical requirements for shows
• Provide training and guidance to Auxiliary Theatre Technicians working at SCT

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum of 2 years directly related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
• Strong attention to detail, strong time management skills, ability to organize and disseminate information effectively
• Ability to work safely and effectively with staff and community members and build relationships with SCT clients
• Effective communication skills, strong initiative, positive attitude, strong customer relations
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
• Valid BC Driver’s License with safe driving history
• Emergency First Aid Certificate with CPR
• Asset certifications include: Live Performance Electrical Certificate (LPEC) or other electrical certification, Fall Arrest, Aerial and Scissor Lift Certification
• Hours and days will vary and include weekends and evenings
• Flexibility in scheduling required
