JOB DESCRIPTION:
Permanent Full-Time Excluded Position
8:30am to 4:30pm / Monday to Friday

The Student Accommodation Advisor is a key member of the Student Engagement, Retention + Success portfolio and the wider Student Services team. The Student Accommodation Advisor is responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of academic accommodations and related services that ensure students with disabilities have equitable access to learning. In this role, the Student Accommodation Advisor collaborates closely with students, faculty, and staff to identify and implement accommodations that balance human rights, academic integrity, and inclusive educational practice. The Student Accommodation Advisor also provides leadership and consultation to the university community on accessibility issues and liaises with external service providers to enhance support.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct intake interviews and assessments to determine academic accommodations for students with various disabilities.

  • Develop and implement individualized accommodation plans in collaboration with students and faculty.

  • Liaise with faculty and staff to ensure accommodations align with course requirements while maintaining academic integrity.

  • Promote self-advocacy and independence among students by providing guidance and resources.

  • Facilitate ongoing reviews of accommodation plans to address changing student needs.

  • Direct and advise third-party services (e.g., interpreters, note takers, support workers) and liaise with providers to ensure timely service delivery.

  • Educate and coach faculty and staff on accessibility best practices.

  • Coordinate information sessions and workshops on accessibility and disability services.

  • Collaborate with campus partners to provide holistic support for students, including referrals to counseling and career services.

  • Participate in program development, research, and evaluation to enhance services.

  • Collect and analyze student service data to inform strategies and improve outcomes.

  • Champion initiatives that foster equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of student interactions, appointments, and accommodations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education, Social Work, Counselling Psychology, Disability Justice, Disability Studies, or a related field.

  • Minimum three (3) years of full-time experience working with adults with disabilities in education, healthcare, arts, or community settings.

  • Demonstrated experience assessing disability-related needs and recommending academic accommodations.

  • Thorough knowledge of a wide range of disabilities, equity issues, and available services in BC and Canada.

  • Experience interpreting medical and psychoeducational assessments to develop accommodation plans.

  • Advanced understanding of the social model of disability and its application in post-secondary education.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and empathy skills to support diverse students.

  • Experience developing and delivering workshops on accessibility, disability justice, and inclusive education.

  • Knowledge of privacy legislation, risk management, and assistive technologies.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in determining reasonable and appropriate accommodations.

  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively in sensitive situations.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in databases, learning management systems, and adaptive technologies.

  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation.
