Vancouver Heritage Foundation advances the appreciation and conservation of our city’s diverse heritage places and their stories. We raise awareness of the vital contribution that heritage makes to a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable community. Through our events, like Heritage Discovery Day, we create opportunities for current and new Vancouverites to learn about the place they live. We aim to reach beyond built heritage to center the diverse history and cultural heritage of Vancouver and inspire the next generation of heritage lovers.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION:
Are you interested in Vancouver’s unique heritage properties and looking for an opportunity to peek inside?

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our site teams and assist in delivering a highly popular event that explores Vancouver’s beautiful heritage houses and buildings. Heritage Discovery Day is a 1-day, self-guided tour organized every year since 2003 by Vancouver Heritage Foundation. This year we are engaging Vancouver’s unique neighbourhoods of Mount Pleasant and Riley Park, where 9 heritage sites will be available to explore.

Event Location: Mount Pleasant and Riley Park, multiple locations
Event Date: Saturday, June 6
Time commitment: 4.5 hour shift + 1 hour training session.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • You will be part of one of our site teams, which are comprised of up to 12 volunteers directed by a team lead volunteer.

  • Assist with the set-up and/or clean-up of the site.

  • Direct ticket holders through the site.

  • Enforce tour guidelines.

  • Answer questions from visitors.

  • Maintain safety and security of the site.

  • Volunteers will remain in one location for the duration of their shift, as the tour is self-guided.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 16+ years of age

  • Positive and friendly attitude with strong interpersonal skills and an eagerness to connect with diverse audiences

  • Able to take direction and manage tasks independently

  • Willing and comfortable enforcing rules with the public

  • Knowledge about heritage, architecture, or history is not necessary, but very welcome
