The BC Culture Days Task Force is pleased to announce that it has engaged the Alliance for Arts and Culture, through the Society to Bridge Arts and Community, to coordinate the 2011 BC Culture Days.

The Alliance's director of communications and special events, Kevin Dale McKeown, will take the role of BC coordinator of BC Culture Days, and Trudy Van Dop of Van Dop & Associates has been retained by the Alliance to serve as the BC Culture Days programmer.

Councillor's Motion Supports Non-Profits Gaming Fund Rights

The Alliance strongly supports a motion which Councillor Ellen Woodsworth has placed on the City Council agenda for their meeting of January 18, which among other things calls on Council to affirm ” both the inherent and contractual rights and interests of charities and non-profits to gaming proceeds, and refuses to expand gaming until those rights and interests are protected.

The City of Vancouver’s 125th anniversary will be marked on April 6, 2011.

The City of Vancouver, the cultural community and the wider general public all have a common interest in celebrating this anniversary, as we have done for the City’s past major anniversaries such as its Golden and Diamond Jubilees in 1936 and 1946; its Centennial in 1986 at Expo 86 and its 115th birthday with the Portrait V2K Millennium Project.

CHRC study confirms strategic role played by cultural sector in new digital economy

The Cultural Human Resources Council's (CHRC) much anticipated Cultural HR Study 2010 is now online. The Study, conducted by the Conference Board of Canada, draws on the input of thousands of employers and workers from the entire cultural community in Broadcasting; Digital Media; Film and Television; Heritage; Live Performing Arts; Music and Sound Recording; Visual Arts and Crafts; and Writing and Publishing. This is the largest HR study ever undertaken on the cultural sector in Canada.

As I write my last blog of 2010 I am in a reflective mood. 

It has been a challenging and sometimes difficult year for many of our members as many have struggled with cuts to their operating budgets, especially those that relied on Gaming Grants as part of their core funding.  The Alliance, too, has struggled with this situation, but, like our members, we have found ways to survive and even thrive.

Arts Board Member of the Year Named

DECEMBER 03, 2010: The Greater Vancouver Society To Bridge Arts And Community yesterday named Public Dreams Society board member Martina Lee the recipient of the fourth annual Arts Board Member of The Year Award. 

The award recognizes the outstanding contributions and achievements of a Metro Vancouver arts organization's board volunteer.

The announcement was made at the annual Arts Fete, co-presented by the Bridge Society and the Alliance for Arts and Culture, which this year took place in Scotiabank Dance Centre's Faris Family Studio.
