JOB DESCRIPTION:
This auxiliary position (hours vary) involves a skilled, technical level of work related to the development and delivery of exhibits and related activities at the Museum of Surrey.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work closely with the Exhibits team to prepare, maintain, and assist in the construction of both permanent and temporary museum exhibits.
• Exercise a significant degree of judgment and initiative within established guidelines under the direction of the Curator of Exhibits.
• Coordinate employees and/or volunteers who assist with exhibit delivery.
• Assist in packing, unpacking, shipping, and delivery of artifacts and displays.
• Use carpentry and power tools safely and effectively.
• Apply knowledge of standard museum practices and possess the physical strength, stamina, and coordination required for the position.
• Work in a fabrication shop, build object and artifact mounts, prepare exhibit layouts, mount text and graphics, and assist in installing or adjusting lighting, video, and sound systems for exhibits and program areas.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by related courses and training in museum or visual arts exhibit preparation work.
• A relevant bachelor’s degree or technical certificate in a related field such as studio arts, stagecraft, design, or drafting is an asset.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in museum or gallery preparation work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Familiarity with fabrication shop work, building object and artifact mounts, preparing exhibit layouts, mounting text and graphics, and installing or adjusting lighting, video, and sound systems for exhibits and program areas.
• A valid BC Driver's License and access to a vehicle are assets.
• Industrial First Aid Level 1 Certificate is an asset.
