JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Collections Care Specialist preserves and shares the Chilliwack Museum + Archives’ object collection, ensuring long-term care, documentation, and accessibility. Reporting to the Curator, this role maintains the integrity of the collection, supports exhibition development, and connects the public with the stories objects hold. The position also contributes to community-centred and inclusive approaches to collections stewardship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain the Museum’s object collection in line with professional standards and policy.

  • Manage acquisitions, documentation, preventive conservation, and deaccessioning.

  • Monitor environmental conditions and prepare reports, appraisals, and treatment recommendations.

  • Manage and enhance the collections database and digital records.

  • Support digital catalogues, research services, and public access tools.

  • Oversee the Education Collection in collaboration with the Engagement & Learning Coordinator.

  • Assist with artifact preparation and installation for exhibitions.

  • Integrate community voices in exhibition interpretation.

  • Supervise volunteers, students, and interns in collections care.

  • Conduct object research and prepare reports, donor documentation, and grant materials.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in Museum Studies, Conservation, History, Art History, Anthropology, or related field.

  • 3–5 years’ experience in a museum, archive, or heritage organization.

  • Knowledge of preventive conservation and ethical stewardship.

  • Commitment to inclusive, community-focused practices.

  • Experience with exhibition preparation and storage solutions.

  • Proficiency with collections management databases (e.g., CollectiveAccess, PastPerfect).

  • Familiarity with CMA and BCMA standards.

  • Interest in connecting Chilliwack’s material culture to community stories.
