Founded in 1919, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is the third largest symphony orchestra in Canada and the largest performing arts organization in Western Canada. The VSO performs more than 150 concerts annually at the Orpheum Theatre and other venues across Metro Vancouver, as well as online. It also operates the VSO School of Music, a 25,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the Orpheum, offering lessons and programs for more than 1,900 students of all ages and levels. The VSO and its school reach over 150,000 people annually through education and community engagement programs.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra seeks an Orchestra Stage Manager (OSM). Reporting directly to the General Manager/Director of Production, the OSM oversees all staging aspects for performances and rehearsals. Responsibilities include managing the orchestra’s onstage logistics, implementing artistic and technical plans, coordinating venue and performance requirements, and ensuring smooth concert execution. The OSM also manages scheduling and mentorship for Assistant Stage Managers and supervises IATSE 118 crew with the Head Carpenter.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Attend all rehearsals and performances, including out-of-town concerts and tours.
• Collaborate with the GM or DoP on budgeting for crew costs and production expenses, including tracking carp reports and preparing estimates.
• Prepare production schedules, venue signage, Run of Show documents, and stage plots.
• Hire assistant stage managers and schedule replacements and casual staff.
• Coordinate production schedules with venues and other providers.
• Confirm instrumentation, personnel lists, stage setups, and programs in advance.
• Review venue contracts and guest artist technical needs with the GM or DoP.
• Attend weekly production meetings and serve on the Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
• Requisition production supplies and maintain a safe performance environment.
• Serve as the contact for guest artists and conductors.
• Address musician concerns regarding stage setup.
• Supervise ASMs and IATSE 118 employees.
• Coordinate percussion and equipment needs with the Head Props, Principal Percussion, and Principal Timpani.
• Work with Head Props to inventory and maintain production equipment and supplies.
• Ensure accurate rehearsal orders and rosters are posted and distributed.
• Adhere to Collective Agreements with VMA 145 and IATSE 118.
• Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Professionalism, respect, and tact when interacting with musicians, staff, and venue representatives.
• Collaborative problem-solving approach and attention to detail.
• Excellent organizational skills and consistency in applying principles fairly.
• Understanding of orchestral life and culture; musical literacy is an asset.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing live performances.
• Experience in production, including sound and video.
• Proficiency with computers, organizational tools, and Excel.
• Ability to work from various locations, including backstage.
