Job Description:
Gateway Theatre’s Creative Leader program aims to address the gap in professional training and opportunities for those looking to grow in creative leadership positions of theatre-making, in particular for those interested in musicals and large-scale works. These positions include Directors, Choreographers, and Music Directors, but as theatre continues to grow and change, other positions may be included as well. The program hopes to offer a more robust experience for upcoming creative leaders by involving them in the creative process of a production. This will be subject to the discretion of the artists involved but could include being part of conversations about design, attending production meetings and auditions, and being present and participating in the shaping of the production through rehearsals and tech.
Timeline:
The Artist will begin their participation upon signing their contract and will be present at rehearsals until opening.
Key Dates:
Pre-production: Present day until November 7, 2026
Rehearsals begin: Thursday November 7, 2025
Tech week: Tuesday, December 1 – Wednesday, December 10, 2026
Preview: Thursday December 10, 2026
Opening: Friday December 11, 2025
Responsibilities:
The Associate Choreographer will support the Choreographer in carrying out their vision, which may or may not include:
-Participating in pre-production planning and rehearsals
-Work in collaboration with the choreographer in executing the creative vision
-May oversee certain aspects of the choreography process
-Attending tech rehearsals
-Administrative duties in rehearsal (i.e. taking notes)
-Assisting in rehearsals with teaching or cleaning existing choreography
Any scheduling conflicts with the production process are requested up front to ensure the experience is a proper match for all involved. While the participant is not expected to have full availability, they need to be able to be present in a robust manner through the process to maximize the mentorship outcomes.
Expectations of the role will be finalized in a meeting between Gateway Theatre, the participant, and the Choreographer. Roles and duties may change as the needs of the production and the strengths of the participants become clearer.
Qualifications: This program is intended for adult individuals already exploring creative leadership in some form or another, looking to grow their experience working on musicals and largescale works.
