The Campbell River Art Gallery is a space for thinking and producing knowledge about contemporary visual art. The Gallery exhibits the work of professional artists from across Canada in its main gallery and satellite cases, with a specific focus on presenting artistic projects from under-represented positions within contemporary art practice.

The Gallery’s commitment to critical pedagogy is enacted through extensive public programming and outreach activities: workshops for adults and youth, school and community gallery tours (followed by an art activity), artist in the school programs, Super Saturday free art-making sessions, and other special events.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Campbell River Art Gallery is currently seeking applications from highly motivated and creative individuals for the position of Curator of Contemporary Art. The successful candidate will be a dedicated individual with the skill and energy required to steward the curatorial program of the Gallery.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Curator of Contemporary Art is responsible for key aspects of the Gallery’s contemporary art exhibition program, ensuring its vitality and capacity for audience engagement. This involves researching and delivering exhibitions and related public events within a coherent artistic vision, producing high-quality interpretive materials, overseeing exhibition installation and event programming, and maintaining the Gallery’s small collection of contemporary art. The Curator maintains awareness of key developments in contemporary visual and media art regionally and nationally and articulates these to specialist and public audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research, develop, propose, implement, and oversee key aspects of the contemporary art program (exhibitions, lectures, interpretive events)

  • Determine and oversee the installation of art exhibitions

  • Make recommendations for acquisitions of works of art to the Executive Director & Collections Committee

  • Manage the care of the Gallery’s permanent collection using best practices, while coordinating with the Museum where the collection is stored

  • Prepare documentation for donor receipts and permanent records

  • Identify, research, and recommend potential funding sources to the Executive Director

  • Prepare and track the exhibition budget

  • Devise research projects for student interns

  • Oversee volunteers, practicum students, and interns associated with the Gallery as required

  • Promote the profile of the Gallery by nurturing relationships with artists, funders, the regional arts community, government agencies, and peer institutions

  • Work collaboratively and responsively as part of the Gallery staff in a team environment

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in Art History or Curatorial Studies and 1–3 years of relevant curatorial experience

  • Broad knowledge of contemporary art and artists in British Columbia, across Canada, and beyond

  • Demonstrated record of exhibition development and experience with program development

  • Working knowledge of the installation process for contemporary art

  • Strong planning and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize projects

  • Well-developed research, organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively and meet deadlines

  • Grant writing ability and fundraising skills

  • Experience with budget preparation and working within fixed budgets

  • Knowledge and understanding of collection-care practices

  • Strong computer literacy, preferably Mac platform; website maintenance experience is an asset

  • Proven project-management and budget monitoring skills

  • Excellent visual acuity and aesthetic judgment

  • Exceptional teamwork, relationship-building, and leadership skills

  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to manage multiple tasks

REMUNERATION:
Starting salary of $30.00 per hour, 35 hours per week, 4 weeks paid vacation, stipend offered towards BC Healthcare
