Union Arts Center (UAC) is a new producing organization formed by the merger of ACT Contemporary Theatre and Seattle Shakespeare Company, bringing a combined 100 years of creating vibrant, quality theatre to the Puget Sound region of Washington state. UAC is located in the historic Eagles Auditorium Building, completed in 1925 and now home to three stages, a cabaret, and several event spaces. The organization is governed by a Board of Trustees, operates under LORT C & D contracts, and is co-led by Managing Director John Bradshaw.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Artistic Director serves as co-executive of Union Arts Center in partnership with the Managing Director, both reporting to the Board of Directors. Together they ensure the organization’s programming and mission are carried out within a financially sustainable model. The Artistic Director provides vision and leadership for the company’s artistic development, oversees productions and programming, and acts as the organization’s artistic voice. This role supervises artistic staff, fosters community relationships, and represents UAC as a cultural leader. The Artistic Director partners closely with the Managing Director on strategy, fundraising, budgeting, and organizational culture.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide artistic leadership in partnership with the Managing Director and Board
Develop programming aligned with UAC’s mission, vision, and values
Lead season planning and curation with a focus on equity and diversity
Oversee production processes, commissions, and education initiatives
Cultivate relationships with artists and the broader theatre community
Represent UAC publicly, including fundraising and community engagement
Ensure consistency in branding, communications, and external messaging
Partner on strategic planning, budget development, and fundraising efforts
Promote an inclusive, equitable workplace culture
Attend Board meetings, staff meetings, and community events regularly
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 5 years of artistic leadership experience in non-profit theatre
Proven ability to deliver compelling artistic vision and programming
Strong collaboration skills with creative teams and administrators
Effective communicator and cultural ambassador with diverse audiences
Experience in building and leading inclusive, engaged teams
Ability to attend evening and weekend performances and events
Growth mindset and openness to feedback
Flexible, organized, and resilient in leadership approach
Background check required under Washington’s Fair Chance Act

REMUNERATION:
Starting salary of $150,000, with competitive benefits including insurance, medical contributions, 403(b) retirement plan, and paid time off.
